Observing the 2024 Solar Eclipse and Earth Day in New York City

A Quake and a Solar Eclipse April Yields to Earth Day and Spring

A busy April with the earthquake and then the Solar Eclipse, in a New York Times article, people can’t help to theorize if there’s a connection between the two events. Then to celebrate Earth Day brings a start to a new season.

Solar Eclipse
According to a New York Times article, solar eclipses will eventually cease due to the moon slowly drifting away from the Earth.  Protective glasses are worn to protect one’s eyes from permanent eye damage or blindness.
This solar eclipse was captured under a pair of dark protective lenses taken from York College campus in Jamaica, Queens, at approximately 3:45 PM, when a good portion of the moon was still covering the sun.  Photo credit: Michael Ye
Professor Timothy Paglione, Chair of the Earth and Physical Sciences department at York College, said, “We just experienced a partial solar eclipse of about 90%, and the maximum solar eclipse at about 3:08 PM from the viewpoint of New York City.”
He recalled the last time a solar eclipse was able to viewed in North America was back in 2017 and in the 1990’s where he was able to observe the solar eclipse. Photo credit: Michael Ye
Professor Paglione said, This instrument is called a Sunspotter, and it’s a safe way to view the solar eclipse. Viewing the solar eclipse is a rare occasion, and the moon eclipses the sun twice a year, but in North America, it can’t be observed very often.” This is an image of one of three Sunspotters available for students to view the solar eclipse.
A York College named Katrell, 20, a Computer Science major was interested in seeing the solar eclipse, hoping to snag a pair of glasses said, “I did see it and it was pretty and it’s in amber red. It’s really cool, and I’m not normally interested in astronomy or the stars, but I just had to see it.” Photo credit: Michael Ye
NYC 4.8 Magnitude Earthquake
According to a New York Times article, people can only theorize that the NY/NJ earthquake had anything to do with the solar eclipse. However, many geoscientists believe that the correlation of the tidal forces causing stress among the Earth’s fault lines is inconclusive, and if it had caused any stress, it would have been very weak.

Earth Day
MTA celebrates Earth Day by posting in their advertisement board that Public transit protects the planet- Happy Earth Day April 22. In a New York Times article, in efforts to combat climate change, President Biden announced $7 billion dollars in grants toward solar power projects.
He also said that the American Climate Corps, which hopes to combat climate change, would create thousands of jobs for the next generation. [On one of the MTA buses]. Photo Credit: Michael Ye
According to the New York Times, in efforts of Earth Day, countries all around the world pledging to fight climate change such as in Paris, France, officials plan to make their city 100 percent cycle-friendly, and in China, they are manufacturing mini-electric vehicles in preventing greenhouse gases from transportation.
In another New York Times article, President Biden under the Inflation Reduction Act, contains hundreds of billions of dollars in tax credits to help companies to switch to low-carbon electricity sources such as wind and solar power. Incentives also includes for people to buy electric vehicles and electric heat pumps for their homes.
